The use of natural stone has significantly increased in-spite of induction of several competitive construction materials in the market. Pakistan’s Marble and granite sector is underlined by unempirical mining technology and high wastage.
According to the vision developed by Strategic Working Group for the marble and granite sector, the potential exists to decrease wastage from current 85% to 75% by 2010, thereby increasing production from 100 million sq ft in 2004 to about 247 million sq ft by 2015. Subsequently, resulting increase in exports from $23 million to $ 2.4 billion in the same period. Furthermore, revenue generation would increase from Rs 2.4 billion to Rs161.6 billion which would go a long way in socio-economic development of the remote regions of Pakistan.
